All about Engineering

Engineering is something a lot of individuals hear about in college. I had the experience of not really knowing exactly what entailed engineering. Many people around me did not have an idea what went into it either unless they were engineering majors. I had a friend who was an environmental engineering major, and she enlightened me a bit about what goes into engineering. It’s basically just designing and making engines, machines, and other public works in society that could be mechanical or structural based. This also involves bridges, railroads, and roadways.

There are a few other sub-types that I can describe:

Electrical engineering is figuring out the machinery that revolves around electricity. This could be appliances, air machinery, cars, motors, or electronics such as GPS and other forms of technology.

Mechanical engineering is working with physics to know how to design and build different types of machinery including air conditioning, refrigerators, elevators, engines, turbines, and combustion engines. It’s a very broad field that works with a lot of physics of moving machines.

Chemical engineering involves designing and maintaining chemical plant facilities. They make household and medical chemicals. They also design processes to make processed foods, fertilizers, plastics, agricultural chemicals, and fuels.

Systems Engineering is basically an IT field. It’s testing and manufacturing different computing technologies. They oversee how to solve complex networking issues with the computer systems. They create and manage complex systems.

Aerospace engineering is what it sounds like: planes, helicopters, jets, and spacecrafts. Crafting and designing machines for flying.

Environmental engineering is about designing machines and processes for the environment. This includes mining, waste containment, recycling units, and water supply protections.

The only way to get into this profession is a Bachelors Degree in any engineering field, passing an exam about the fundamental of engineering (FE), then going to get four years of experience and becoming a licensed engineer with the Principles and Practices of Engineering (PE).

A lot of math and science tends to be involved in this sector of education and career type. If you’re not a math or science person, I would not recommend this institution as a career field you could enter.

I hope this base information could help you make a decision.
